Every plastic item that doesn’t get recycled breaks into smaller and smaller pieces over time. Here's how to reduce your exposure.

What are microplastics?

Any plastic item that isn't recycled breaks into smaller and smaller pieces over time. They contain chemicals and are found in water, personal care products, food – and our bodies.

  1. Hang clothing to dry to prevent microfibers from being released by dryers.
  2. Drink less bottled water. Drink filtered tap water.
  3. Avoid microwaving food in plastic containers. It can contaminate the food when heated. Use glass or ceramic containers instead.
  4. Avoid using single-use plastic products like cups, straws and grocery bags.
  5. Use loose leaf tea, reusable tea bags or tea balls instead of bagged tea.
  6. Hot liquids in paper cups release microplastics.
  7. Vacuum and dust regularly to prevent microplastics from accumulating on surfaces and being inhaled.
