Infographic: 6 Ways to Make Your Child’s Shots Less Stressful

Many children fear getting shots. Help them feel more in control by making a plan with them.

  1. Prepare for your visit. Be honest and explain that vaccines can pinch or sting, but it won't hurt for long.
  2. Pack your child's favorite toy, book or blanket for comfort during the visit.
  3. Distract and comfort your child by cuddling, singing or talking softly right before the shot is given.
  4. Comfort your child with something sweet before the shot – even a very small amount can help reduce the pain response. Try a drop of sugar water (1 tsp sugar + 2 tsp warm water)
  5. Try distracting your child during the shot with a toy, listening to a story, or pointing out things in the room.
  6. Be supportive after your child gets the shots, even if they cry or are emotional.
