Breanna’s Story
June 21, 2021
“I met Dr. Lynn Woo for the first time last November. My urinary system started to go downhill after a series of complications from spina bifida and caudal regression syndrome. Dr. Woo was incredibly kind and knowledgeable. She developed a game plan, and brought Dr. Kyle Scarberry onto the team that would ultimately remove my bladder and right kidney.
It was a huge decision for me to make, but I am so thankful I did. Dr. Woo and Dr. Scarberry’s guidance eased my anxiety about the process ahead. I spent weeks in the hospital leading up to and following surgery. Angie’s Garden was a blessing during that time. I planted an amaryllis that Rainbow’s horticulturalist, Diana says is growing beautifully!
My surgery was a great success! I am looking forward to going back to school. My dream is to work with medically complex children and their families to give them the resources they need to succeed. My parents and I are so incredibly grateful to the doctors who changed my life for the better!” – Breanna Sprenger
Dr. Woo and Dr. Scarberry worked together to remove Breanna’s right kidney and bladder. They then created an ileal conduit urostomy for her, eliminating the need for bladder catheterization, and giving Breanna more independence with her care routine. She has been free of infections since the operation and is resuming her routine activities, which was the ultimate goal.
Dr. Woo is a pediatric urologist specializing in spina bifida and other congenital urologic disorders, and Dr. Scarberry is an adult reconstructive urologist with a special interest in caring for patients with conditions requiring ongoing care as adolescents and adults. Dr. Woo and Dr. Scarberry’s combined areas of expertise created the perfect team for Breanna.
