The Fourth of July is a day for fun, family and fireworks! But did you know 9,000-plus fireworks-related injuries are treated in the emergency room every year?
Enjoy your celebration safely! Prevent injuries by following these simple fireworks safety tips:
- Use only legal fireworks. Illegal fireworks result in the majority of serious injuries reported.
- Ensure you have a water supply nearby in case of a fire or mishap.
- Maintain a safe distance from the fireworks launch site.
- Wear protective eyewear when lighting and handling fireworks.
- Never pick up or relight a firework that did not fully ignite.
- Use fireworks outdoors and never use fireworks indoors.
- Supervise children at all times and never allow them to handle or ignite fireworks.

- Burns are the most common injury.
- Sparklers burn at a temperature of 1,800–3,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Most injuries are caused by firecrackers, sparklers and bottle rockets.
- The most frequently injured body parts are the hands, head/neck and eyes.
