The Fourth of July is a day for fun, family and fireworks! But did you know 9,000-plus fireworks-related injuries are treated in the emergency room every year?

Enjoy your celebration safely! Prevent injuries by following these simple fireworks safety tips:

  • Use only legal fireworks. Illegal fireworks result in the majority of serious injuries reported.
  • Ensure you have a water supply nearby in case of a fire or mishap.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the fireworks launch site.
  • Wear protective eyewear when lighting and handling fireworks.
  • Never pick up or relight a firework that did not fully ignite.
  • Use fireworks outdoors and never use fireworks indoors.
  • Supervise children at all times and never allow them to handle or ignite fireworks.

Did You Know?

  • Burns are the most common injury.
  • Sparklers burn at a temperature of 1,800–3,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Most injuries are caused by firecrackers, sparklers and bottle rockets.
  • The most frequently injured body parts are the hands, head/neck and eyes.
  • A rocket can reach speeds of 150 miles per hour and the shell can reach as high as 650 feet.
  • 280 people go to the ER every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month around July 4.
