Why Choose Us
UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is an institutional leader in innovation, community engagement and academic excellence. The Pediatrics Residency program embodies these ideals through new educational programs and approaches that foster residents’ personal and professional development.
X+Y Schedule
With the 2018-2019 academic year, UH Rainbow embarked on a collaborative multi-institutional pilot study evaluating the implementation and impact of a new scheduling model. The X+Y schedule is a novel approach in pediatrics residency education aimed at enhancing resident engagement in their clinical rotations and continuity clinic. In our model, residents spend six weeks in protected clinical rotations in cycle with two weeks dedicated ambulatory experience. During the ambulatory weeks residents spend time in primary care continuity clinic, academic half-day sessions, and additional clinical experiences. UH Rainbow was one of the first five pediatric residency programs in the country originally granted permission by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to pilot this model.
UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children
In July 2018, the new UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children opened its doors to the midtown Cleveland community. Developed and built in close partnership with the community we serve, this facility is the home for the resident primary continuity clinic and ambulatory block. The building houses medical care for women and children and includes dental care, eye care, WIC, our medical-legal partnership and additional community resources to comprehensively meet the needs of patients and families in the city of Cleveland.
Taking Flight Program
During the 2018-2019 academic year, we introduced a comprehensive advising program built within the X+Y framework: Taking Flight. Our residents are grouped into four multi-class “flights”, who come together every six weeks for two-week unique ambulatory rotations throughout residency training. During their ambulatory rotations, each resident will meet with an assigned clinical coach, faculty adviser and peer mentor, to create a professional development network and discuss future career goals. Additionally, each “flight” has weekly meetings during their ambulatory rotation to discuss development of group research/QI projects, community outreach and social events. Every flight is named after a pediatrician who has exemplified the residency’s pillars: Humanism, Critical Thinking, Decision Making, Evidence Based Medicine and Back to the Bedside.
Junior Silver
In the winter months, one of our general pediatrics inpatient teams switches from a traditional intern-senior team to an all-junior team. The rotation encourages the junior residents to focus on developing their independent patient management skills under the mentorship of a member of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. This rotation is always a favorite among residents.
New Resident Conference Design
During the 2019-2020 academic year, we introduced a new conference design for residents. This new structure focuses on dedicating mornings to clinical activity and patient care, while providing protected time for resident education at lunchtime. Residents now have consolidated conferences in the early afternoon with attendance from fellows and faculty from various disciplines to enhance their education.
