Nonsurgical Pediatric Urology Treatment Options

Most children seen at or our multidisciplinary pediatric urology treatment centers do not need to undergo a surgical procedure. Many common urological problems can be managed with behavioral therapy or medication. Other pediatric urology problems that may not require any surgical intervention include:

Depending on your child's specific urological condition and overall health profile, his or her care team may discuss other nonsurgical treatment options with you, including:

  • Biofeedback therapy: a therapy that uses computer simulation to teach children with urinary tract infections and other bladder control problems how to regulate various bodily functions for ongoing condition management.
  • Botox treatments: injections made into the bladder every six to 12 months can help relax muscles and control spasms in children experiencing nerve damage or overactive bladder.
  • Neuromodulation: a therapy that uses non-harmful electric impulses to alter nerve functions in children with voiding dysfunctions.

Pediatric Surgery & Surgical Care for Urologic Conditions

Patients and parents can trust that the UH team will only choose surgery after other treatments have been considered. Our pediatric urology specialists consult closely with several pediatric specialists across the UH Rainbow system of care, including:

This collaborative approach to care ensures the right diagnosis, the right choice of treatment and optimal outcomes.

Once a family has determined to move forward with surgery, we provide caring support and education every step of the way. Our pediatric urologists and surgeons leverage the most sophisticated urodynamic testing equipment, including sonograms, X-rays and MRI. We work with MRI specialists who have specific expertise with complex kidney and pelvic organ abnormalities.

Our team utilizes the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques, including endoscopic laser treatment for managing stone disease and laparoscopic procedures for complex urinary tract reconstruction. These approaches result in less pain and scarring, speed up recovery times and allow children to return home faster, thereby minimizing disruption to normal childhood activity and development.
