Clinical Training

The clinical training component of our fellowship is based primarily in the Pediatric Emergency Department & Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center at UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, which serves acutely ill and injured children from Cleveland’s neighborhoods as well as throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond. Our dedicated team of board-certified PEM physicians, PEM fellows, pediatric and emergency medicine residents, specialized pediatric emergency nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics, social workers, clinical pharmacists, and child life specialists are committed to providing our patients with the highest quality pediatric emergency care.

The Pediatric Emergency Department is an integral part of the clinical services offered at UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, with an annual patient volume exceeding 32,000 visits at our main campus facility. The emergency care provided in our department is supported by our large state-of-the-art tertiary children’s hospital that includes a 23-bed PICU and Pediatric CICU staffed by pediatric critical care specialists, along with a Pediatric Sedation Unit. We have the privilege of working closely with a diverse and incredibly talented group of pediatric medical and surgical specialists. UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital has been an American College of Surgeons-accredited Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center for more than 3 decades.

Our fellowship meets all requirements set forth by the American Board of Pediatrics/American Board of Emergency Medicine and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Our curriculum offers flexibility in order to foster the unique elective experiences and scholarly projects that will enhance each individual fellow’s training experience. Fellows collaborate with the program’s leadership and all faculty within the division to create a PEM fellowship experience that is tailored to meet their unique goals for careers within the dynamic subspecialty of pediatric emergency medicine. Fellows spend clinical time in the Pediatric Emergency Department developing and refining the diagnostic, therapeutic, procedural, teaching, and administrative skills required to provide exceptional care to acutely ill and injured children in the emergency department setting.

We offer a curriculum tailored to meet the learning needs and training requirements for physicians who have completed residency training in both Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. For Emergency Medicine-trained physicians, we offer both 2 and 3 year training curriculum options.
