Researchers Play Key Role in Long History of Sleep Research

UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s and Case Western Reserve University have a long history of sleep research in children and families. Our current and former sleep clinicians and researchers have played key roles in many of the most pivotal pediatric sleep research studies.

Research at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Advances Pediatric Sleep Medicine

  • Susan Redline, MD helped to establish the Cleveland Family Study, the largest family-based study of sleep apnea worldwide.
  • Carol Rosen, MD and CWRU Professor Emeritus led a variety of well-known studies including:
    • The Childhood Adenotonsillectomy Trial (CHAT), the only randomized controlled trial to study the efficacy of adenotonsillectomy for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea
    • The Sleep and Asthma Cohort (SAC) Study, which was an observational study in children with sickle cell anemia
    • The Pediatric Adenotonsillectomy Trial for Snoring (PATS) study. Sally Ibrahim, MD assumed the role of Principal Investigator in 2020. The PATS study aimed to evaluate treatment options for children who have snoring and mild sleep disordered breathing problems during sleep but do not have sleep apnea.
  • James Spilsbury, PhD, was the lead author on research developing the well-known Cleveland Adolescent Sleepiness Questionnaire (CASQ).
  • Kristie Ross, MD, is the site Principal Investigator for the first longitudinal study in the Severe Asthma Research Program (SARP). She also leads the asthma evaluation in the PATS study.
  • Carol Rosen, MD and Sally Ibrahim, MD, were lead site investigators for the Early Onset Narcolepsy trial that published data on the increased rates of narcolepsy during the H1N1 outbreak.
