Family Medicine Residency Offers Comprehensive Clinical Training and Research Opportunities

We will not be recruiting for the Family Medicine residency for the upcoming Match. We will continue to train those already in these programs, and we are committed to ensuring all of the currently enrolled trainees successfully complete their training here at UH.

UH remains committed to Family Medicine and graduate medical education. The community Family Medicine residencies will continue at UH St. John and UH Geauga medical centers. Both of these programs have a long-standing emphasis on training in the communities we serve and a remarkable record of success. Family medicine residents from UH St. John and UH Geauga medical centers will have opportunities to rotate to UH Cleveland Medical Center for appropriate tertiary/quaternary services and research activities.

Further, UH Cleveland Medical Center and UH Community Consortium will continue to train more than 1,020 residents every year who will become our physician leaders of tomorrow serving Northeast Ohio.

About Our Current Program

The three-year family medicine residency at Case Western Reserve University / University Hospitals of Cleveland Medical Center Program was established in 1978, in the heart of urban Cleveland, Ohio.

Our Vision: Advancing compassionate care, strong communities, and compelling scholarship, guided by the art and science of Family Medicine.

Our mission is to train and educate family physician leaders, equipping them for success across the scope of family medicine, with a focus on allyship and on caring for patients from diverse, powerful, historically marginalized communities challenged by healthcare disparities.

Our training emphasizes:

  • Development of critical thinking skills and medical decision making
  • Excellence in the care of complex and medically vulnerable patients
  • Acquisition of primary care-centered procedural skills
  • Professional development in an environment that promotes life-long learning and scholarship

Our program offers the opportunity to care for a diverse patient population, promoting teamwork, leadership and a commitment to both prevention and healing of illness and disease. As dedicated teachers, our faculty aim to prepare residents confident in their ability to provide excellent clinical care as they forge a satisfying and durable medical career in the field of family medicine and community health.

During their years of training, our residents meet educational and professional milestones as their knowledge and wisdom evolve. Our residents participate in formal didactic programs, and more importantly, learn how to expand knowledge in a variety of clinical contexts using an array of resources.

Our program offers a wide variety of experiences beyond the Family Medicine Center and encourage residents to discover their interests and talents. With regards to research, our department hosts is a nationally-recognized family medicine research divisions, headed by our Chair, Dr. Goutham Rao.
