Tracks and Special Interests in Family Medicine
Global Health Interest Group
Family medicine is a universal profession relevant in any community or society. Global health practice is a state of mind and an evidence-based discipline, rather than simply a set of technical skills gained through a special training program. Health and the pursuit of health are fundamental human rights, not privileges.
Residents interested in learning and experiencing the cross-cultural issues involved in the practice of medicine in developing countries will learn many transferable skills from our curriculum designed to teach partnerships with patients facing many types of challenges in their lives and communities. Interested faculty and residents may need to discuss medical topics, current research, the role of NGOs and other organizations and advocacy.
With advanced planning of at least 1 year and participation in the global health interest group, a resident in good standing may plan a 2 to 4-week a 4 week elective in an international site, if permitted by public health regulations. All requests, and a preliminary list of goals and objectives, must be submitted in writing to Drs. Marsh and Said one a year in advance of the proposed elective. We do not have a relationship with the healthcare team at a suitable site at this time but hope to reestablish one in the future.
Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group
Our residency has registered with the Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum; all residents have access to the curriculum and may plan to achieve residency certification by logging cases and completing activities during dedicated elective time. This is a work in progress, improving every year.
LGBTQ Interest Group
This group, headed by Dr. Michelle Caster, meets regularly to discuss evidence-based approaches to understanding health challenges and providing the best care for LGBTQ patients, with a focus on providing transgender care in a primary care setting.
Sports Medicine Track
The sports medicine track was developed for residents interested in expanding knowledge in sports medicine and integrating it into their work in family medicine, or pursuing a career with a sports medicine focus. This program is coordinated through the Primary Care Sports Medicine department.
Although all residents complete the curriculum in sports medicine and graduate with significant skills and knowledge, a limited number of residents are selected for the track on the basis of academic accomplishment, interest, and service to the residency.
