Trauma Surgery
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center is a quaternary referral center in Cleveland, Ohio. Our trauma center holds Level 1 verification status from the American College of Surgeons, which indicates we provide comprehensive trauma care services according to nationally recognized standards for every aspect of injury care. The Level 1 trauma center is the hub of our Trauma Institute and coordinates efforts with the UH Level 3 trauma centers, located at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, a campus of UH Regional Hospitals, UH St. John Medical Center, and UH Portage Medical Center, and Southwest General Health Center. Together, this regional access to trauma care services has improved outcomes for thousands of patients and represents a significant resource for the community. We are also taking a leading role in community outreach and education to curb violence and reduce return visits to the ER.
Our trauma surgery service admits over 2000 patients a year, maintaining a daily census of about 25-30 patients each day. Our team includes 11 fellowship-trained trauma surgeons and about 15 Advanced Practice Providers/Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants (APPs). Three trauma surgeons and at least 4 APPs are immediately available in-house 365 days a year. An acutely injured patient will be met in one of our trauma bays by an emergency medicine physician, trauma anesthesiologist, trauma surgeon, and a trauma APP, all working together for the best outcome.
