The Congenital Heart Collaborative (CHC) features a nationally recognized team of pediatric heart specialists, including pediatric cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and cardiac intensivists. All of our experts have extensive training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of congenital heart conditions. For children of all ages, the pediatric heart specialists at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital have the experience and expertise to care for any heart condition that a child may experience. From prenatal diagnosis to treatment and recovery, our pediatric heart team provides comprehensive advanced cardiac care. Since children with heart disease require lifelong care, our congenital heart program also offers the expertise of board-certified adult congenital heart disease specialists who are experienced in monitoring and treating the original defect as well as related problems that may develop over time.
New State-of-the-Art Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit Enhances Patient Care
The UH Rainbow Heart Center will add a new state-of-the-art Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) on the 2nd floor of Rainbow in November, 2023. According to Ira Cheifetz, MD, Chief of Cardiac Critical Care, the new unit will feature 12-beds with large patient rooms, comfortable space for families, and efficient work areas for team members. The unit has been designed with plenty of windows to allow natural light and a child and family friendly décor enhanced with all of the latest advancements in technology to support a state-of-the-art ICU. The space will also include warm touches that reflect the compassionate care and enrich the patient, family, and staff friendly environment. With the completion of the PCICU, the Rainbow Heart Center will encompass 22 inpatient beds in a seamless environment --including 12 ICU beds and 10 stepdown beds, each with the ability to flex to either level of care -- and will be contiguous with the Heart Center Hybrid OR/Cath Cath/EP Labs and in close proximity to our cardiothoracic operating rooms and the PICU.
These enhancements will provide families access to advanced technologies including the latest in cardiac imaging as well as one of the most experienced and extensive pediatric heart teams in Ohio. This unique and highly collaborative team is committed to helping make the difference for families through the CHC’s comprehensive array of advanced procedures and services including the only Ohio hospital offering a dedicated fetal cardiac intervention program, the cardiac neurodevelopment program and a fully-accredited adult congenital heart program.
