Research

Research is a crucial component of the Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center Nephrology Fellowship Program training. To allow for a meaningful research experience, fellows are provided protected research time (typically four months in the second year of training for the clinical fellows or 24 months for the research fellows).

Fellows identify or are assigned a research mentor within the first three months of their fellowship. University Hospitals faculty are involved in a broad range of research ranging from leading-edge laboratory-based basic science, clinical and epidemiologic studies and health services research and are available to provide guidance and mentorship.

Research Rotations

During the research rotations, fellows are provided opportunities to do the following:

• Develop systematic, controlled and critical investigation of hypotheses under direct supervision
• Increase critical thinking and intellectual curiosity
• Learn research methodology, biostatistics and the development of writing and presentation skills

At the conclusion of their research, fellows present their findings (a cogent summary of the background, rationale methods, results and implications of their research) at the division research conference and also to the wider scientific community in the form of a peer-reviewed publication, abstract, poster, oral presentation or invited review, if applicable.
