Nephrology Fellowship Tracks
The Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center Nephrology Fellowship Program includes tracks in both clinical training and research. The clinical training track is designed for fellows interested in a clinical practice career. The research training track is designed for fellows interested in pursuing academic careers that combine skills in kidney-related research and teaching in clinical or basic science.
Clinical Training Track
Trainees in the two-year clinician-educator track receive 18 months of clinical training at University Hospitals, the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Center and MetroHealth Medical Center, while four months are dedicated to research and scholarship. Clinical experience includes the following:
- Acute and chronic kidney diseases
- Continuous renal replacement therapy
- Dialysis therapy (in-center hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and home dialysis)
- Hypertension
- Renal transplantation
- Fluid and electrolyte disorders
Research-Scientist Track
The Nephrology Fellowship Program is part of the recently NIH-NIDDK awarded Cleveland Kidney, Urology and Hematology Training Network (KUH-TN) grant. This grant represents a citywide collaboration between two Universities (Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland State University) and 4 medical centers (University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Metro Health Medical Center and Cleveland Clinic Foundation). The Cleveland KUN-TN will allow trainees the intellectual and methodological tools needed to accelerate discovery and its translation to the treatment and cure of kidney, urologic and hematologic diseases within a multidisciplinary environment, under strong mentoring and guidance from faculty.
