Education Our Next Leaders Through Our Endocrinology Fellowship
The Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center Endocrinology Fellowship Program involves inpatient consultation services and outpatient clinics, including experiences in pediatric endocrinology and reproductive endocrinology.
Diversity of Patient Populations
The training program is based at two major teaching hospitals:
- The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center
- University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center
The diversity of patient populations in the two teaching sites offers trainees exceptional opportunities to experience patients with different backgrounds covering all aspects of the specialty.
Two Training Tracks Available for Endocrinology Careers
Two training tracks are offered at the Division of Endocrinology at University Hospitals for applicants interested in endocrinology careers. The clinical track is designed for those interested in pursuing careers as clinical and/or academic endocrinologists. Opportunities are available for clinical or laboratory research, but the main thrust of the track is directed toward excellent clinical training in endocrinology and metabolism.
Two-Year Program Leads to Board Eligibility
Experience is gained on inpatient consultation services, outpatient clinics and at didactic conferences. Promotion from year one to year two of training is contingent upon satisfactory performance during the first year and attainment of all the required milestones set forth by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This two-year training program leads to board eligibility in the subspecialty of endocrinology and metabolism.
Research Track in Endocrinology and Metabolism
The research track is designed to prepare candidates for a research-focused (clinical or basic) academic career in endocrinology and metabolism. Applicants are expected to give a minimum of three years commitment to this track. Components of the track include:
- A minimum of two years research experience in the laboratory of one of the members of the division and/or one of the collaborating faculty in the basic science departments
- Appropriate formal classroom work in the graduate school of Case Western Reserve University
- Sufficient clinical experience to provide board eligibility in endocrinology and metabolism
Specific details, research focus and available slots vary and are discussed with interested candidates.
Endocrinology and Metabolism Fellowship Professionalism Standards
Professionalism and ethical behavior are hallmarks of the Division of Endocrinology training program. Our faculty members serve both as mentors and role model clinicians for the values of professionalism. Over the years, many of the fellows completing the fellowship training at this program have become leaders in their respective fields. While many graduates of the program pursue further academic careers, some have joined clinical practice or pharmaceutical companies.
