Become a UH Future Nurse Academy Summer Mentor
Job Description
The primary role of the summer mentor position is to build on the existing framework for UH Future Nurse Academy. This includes engaging schools, teachers, families, and community assets to support students entering the 10th, 11th, or 12th grader on their path to successful careers in the health professions.
The students will be supported in three areas: social/emotional development, executive functioning skills development, and exposure/academics. The Mentor is responsible for modeling behavior and ensuring that all scholars participate fully in all activities. The UH Future Nurse Academy Mentor is akin to a summer camp counselor. There are three two-week programs that run June 17–28, July 8–19, and July 22–August 2 from 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Mentors can sign up for one or multiple sessions, with supervisor approval. Mentors are expected to be with the students for the whole day of the entire duration of the 10-day program. Mentors will also be expected to attend an on-boarding program prior to June 17 that will coach you in how to be a mentor, and will give you skills and tools necessary for success.
Specific Duties Include
- Collaborate with multiple partners to ensure the success individuals in all three areas: social/emotional development, executive functioning skills development, and exposure/academics.
- Manage students participation in various activities, including:
- Clinical shadowing / Lectures
- Wellness activities such as meditation, mindfulness practice or yoga
- Small/large group work
- Create leadership opportunities for students to develop life/career skills, from project planning to implementation to evaluation.
- Attend all mandatory trainings and events.
- Act as a role model for students and advocate for youth, in general.
Position Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a current UH NAII or NAIII in good standing
- Approval from current UH manager to participate
