Pediatric Sleep Study

Sleep Studies at the Pediatric Sleep Center

The expert team at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Pediatric Sleep Center performs comprehensive family-friendly overnight and daytime sleep studies to monitor a child’s breathing, brainwaves and muscle movements during sleep. With a sleep study, doctors can understand the child’s specific sleep issues to best determine the right treatment. Our board-certified sleep specialists conduct careful interpretation of overnight sleep studies for children and teenagers. Our highly skilled doctors utilize the latest diagnostics and treatments available to help diagnose and resolve sleep problems in children. The Pediatric Sleep Center utilizes clinical offices for consultations and separate locations for pediatric sleep studies performed by our specially trained pediatric sleep technologists.

Comfortable and Convenient

Most sleep studies involve a polysomnography (PSG), which is a type of overnight sleep test that uses delicate sensors placed on the child’s head, body and legs. Each sensor has an attached wire that connects to a small monitoring box near the child’s pillow. Setting up the sensors takes about an hour. The sensors are removed the next morning after the sleep test is over. Using these sensors for readings, a technician records the child’s brain waves, breathing, movements and noises during sleep. The test results are called a polysomnogram.

Family-Centered Care

The Pediatric Sleep Center PSG test is performed at University Hospitals (located on the 6th floor of the Bolwell Building) or at a nearby suburban hotel location. A parent is allowed and expected to stay with the child from the start of the sleep test to the finish. Studies are carried out all days of the week, including weekends.

Our talented pediatric team focuses on the unique needs of young patients by providing:

  • Appropriately sized beds and pediatric-specific equipment
