What Is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic fibrosis affects breathing and digestion. It causes the body to make thick, sticky mucus that clogs the airways of the lungs, and it can prevent the pancreas from doing its job to help digest food. In people with cystic fibrosis, the sweat glands also produce very salty sweat.

Addison’s CF Journey

Addison describes, in her own words, her cystic fibrosis diagnosis as a newborn and how she takes care of herself by keeping active, taking her medications and eating nutritious foods.

Care for Children

Most people with cystic fibrosis receive their diagnosis when they are babies or children. In fact, two thirds of cystic fibrosis patients are diagnosed by one year of age. At University Hospitals, we’re honored to help our pediatric cystic fibrosis patients live happy, full and longer lives.

Care for Adults

As our cystic fibrosis patients grow from children to adults, we transition their care in a carefully orchestrated manner. Our team has the experience and expertise to provide the specialized care that adults with cystic fibrosis need, which is important because the condition often becomes more complicated with age.

Diagnosing Cystic Fibrosis – Newborn Screening & Sweat Testing

Testing for cystic fibrosis may be needed if you or your child has an abnormal screen or experiences signs or symptoms of cystic fibrosis, including persistent cough, frequent lung infections or trouble gaining weight.
