PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency

The purpose of the PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy program is to build on experiences gained during a PGY1 pharmacy residency program, and prepare graduates for specialized practice in infectious diseases pharmacy, and help residents develop the knowledge, skills, and clinical leadership to care for patients with a variety of infectious diseases.

Our primary goal of the PGY2 Infectious Diseases program at UH Cleveland Medical Center is to train our resident to become a competent and confident provider of comprehensive pharmaceutical care for a variety of patients with infectious diseases in addition to laying the foundation for success in managing an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP).

The PGY2 pharmacy residency is a 12-month commitment designed to provide postgraduate experience in infectious diseases pharmacotherapy. Graduating PGY2s will be prepared for a role in inpatient and/or outpatient settings for infectious diseases, and will be eligible for pharmacy board certification in infectious diseases.

Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship

The Infectious Diseases division at UH Cleveland Medical Center consists of both inpatient and outpatient services and is the primary teaching site for the Case Western Reserve University ID Fellowship Program, which also partners with MetroHealth Medical Center and Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Inpatient services include two general consult teams and one transplant ID consult service. The two general teams typically have an average census of 15-20 patients per team, and each is staffed by one attending physician generally accompanied by one rotating fellow and an ID pharmacist. Other participants include an ID physician assistant and rotating medicine residents and medical students. Outpatient ID services consist of the John T. Carey Special Immunology Unit (SIU) clinic, which is one of the largest primary care centers for people with HIV in northern Ohio and has a dedicated HIV pharmacy specialist, the UH Roe Green Center for Travel Medicine & Global Health, and general ambulatory ID.

UH Cleveland Medical Center and UH Rainbow Babies & Children's are renowned for their robust antimicrobial stewardship (AS) program, which has been designated as an IDSA Antimicrobial Stewardship Centers of Excellence. The program collaborates closely with infection prevention, microbiology, and quality and are supported by 1.1 FTE for physician leadership, 3 pharmacists, and a data analyst. The AS team is actively engaged in multidisciplinary research, hospital and system-wide initiatives, and didactic programs including a dedicated AS rotation for ID fellows, the IDSA AS Curriculum, and conferences for internal medicine and other trainees. The group publishes a quarterly newsletter and an annual guidebook and serves as the focal point for AS throughout the hospital system.
