The Department of Otolaryngology’s observership offers invaluable experiences primarily for international medical graduates (IMGs), providing them with their initial exposure to medical procedures, practices, and the functioning of the healthcare system within U.S. medical institutions. This is a unique opportunity to refine medical skills and gain new knowledge that will shape future careers. Additionally, we are happy to host established otolaryngologists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons who want to learn more about University Hospitals.
In addition to benefiting IMGs, our observerships serve broader purposes. They help raise awareness of our program internationally, breaking down barriers and fostering connections with other ENT departments. By recognizing and embracing the outstanding talent from overseas, we open our doors to receiving more specialists from beyond the U.S., enriching our institution and enhancing its visibility. This inclusivity is vital for effectively addressing the diverse patient population we serve.
Moreover, our observerships strive to provide opportunities for individuals from underrepresented populations in medicine, both domestically and abroad. By bridging gaps and addressing disparities within the field, we contribute to creating a more equitable future in healthcare while nurturing the professionals of tomorrow.
As part of your observership, you will be permitted to observe the activities of the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, which include academic, clinic and surgical activities at University Hospitals.

“I am a Colombian MD, with a deep passion in the area of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, for which I have directed my professional life in this area. I am the founder of the Otorhinolaryngology Interest and research Group at my university (Universidad El Bosque, Colombian School of Medicine).
I am currently doing an observership in the department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at University Hospitals, where it has been a truly excellent experience. The physicians I have shadowed have been very kind, helpful and welcoming. This experience has been excellent in helping develop my skills as a future otolaryngologist, and further solidifies my aspirations of entering residency here in the US. It was very encouraging getting to meet physicians with a similar background as mine, and seeing the passion that the professors of the department share.
Additionally, it was awesome getting to see such excellent female role models and leaders here in the department, as it is something that is not common in Colombia. This further encourages me to strive to be as great as doctor Maronian and doctor Mowry, and propel the specialty forward both here in the US as well as in Colombia.”
