Peter J. Pronovost, M.D., Ph.D., chief clinical transformation officer at University Hospitals (UH), an integrated super-regional health system in northern Ohio, has been named the 2019 recipient of the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research. The Baxter International Foundation and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) will present the Prize on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, during the AUPHA Annual Meeting in New Orleans. The Prize, which has been awarded since 1986, recognizes the contributions of health services researchers who have had a significant impact on the health of the public in one of three primary focus areas: health services management, health policy development or healthcare delivery. An independent committee of past winners, distinguished academics, and internationally recognized researchers selects the recipient each year.
“Dr. Pronovost has had an immense impact on the field of health services delivery and research. It is an honor to recognize his many contributions with the Prize this year,” said Nir Menachemi, Ph.D., MPH, professor and chair of health policy and management at Indiana University and the Graham Prize selection committee chair. “Dr. Pronovost is an accomplished clinician and scientist, and a world leader in patient safety research and practice. He has concentrated his passions for the betterment of patients around the globe.”

Dr. Pronovost develops and leads strategic initiatives to improve value across the UH health system. He is the clinical lead for population health and high-reliability medicine, with direct responsibility for the UH employee accountable care organization. He also leads the growth and adoption of digital health – including telehealth and virtual health – solutions to better serve the patient and provider communities. Dr. Pronovost is a clinical professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He previously served as Johns Hopkins Medicine senior vice president for Patient Safety and Quality and the founder and director of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. He also served as the senior vice president for Clinical Strategy and as the chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare.

Since 1986, the Baxter International Foundation and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration have awarded the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research to recognize researchers who have made major contributions to the health of the public through innovative research in health services. The Prize honors the late William B. Graham, longtime chairman and CEO of Baxter International Inc., and is internationally regarded as the premier recognition for individuals conducting health services research. The Prize includes an award of $25,000 to the individual and $25,000 to a non-profit institution that supports the winner’s work.
