The comprehensive heart surgery program now available at UH Ahuja Medical Center, 3999 Richmond Rd., Beachwood, brings the expertise of the UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute to patients in east Cuyahoga County and Ashtabula, Geauga and Lake counties.

Members of the same UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute surgical team that performs the most advanced heart procedures at UH Cleveland Medical Center also operate as a team at UH Ahuja Medical Center. Benjamin Medalion, MD, Director, Cardiac Surgery, UH Ahuja Medical Center and Clinical Associate Professor, Surgery, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, was a key player in developing the program.

“At UH Ahuja Medical Center, our team specializes in patients who need routine bypass surgery or heart valve surgery and are low to moderate surgical risk based on the absence of other serious comorbidities,” Dr. Medalion explains. “Patients from other eastern region UH hospitals who meet these criteria are coming to us to receive the same quality of care as at UH Cleveland Medical Center, closer to home.” Patients who need complex, less common heart procedures or who are higher risk are still referred to UH Cleveland Medical Center, he stresses.

In 2017 the team achieved a 100 percent success rate for heart surgery at UH Ahuja as measured by in-hospital and post-surgical mortality. The cardiac surgery team is committed to bringing best practices to patients at UH Ahuja Medical Center, including small-incision surgery. The hospital’s operating rooms are state-of-the-art, and the new surgical intensive care unit opened in 2017 with post-operative care provided by dedicated nurse practitioners and registered nurses.
