Paul R. Hinchey, MD, MBA, is Chief Operating Officer of University Hospitals (UH), a comprehensive health system with annual revenues of $5.4 billion, 21 hospitals (including 5 joint ventures), more than 50 health centers and outpatient facilities, and over 200 physician offices located throughout 16 counties. He assumed this position in December 2022 and joined UH in March 2021.
As Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Hinchey is leading University Hospitals’ march toward systemness and value by leveraging its strengths as a unified health system to create the best value in healthcare. He is responsible for all of UH’s clinical operations system-wide, including the operations of the academic medical center’s main campus, physician services, nursing, acute-care pharmacy operations, Connor Whole Health and the community hospital network. Additionally, Dr. Hinchey is overseeing the clinical aspects of UH’s conversion of its electronic medical record to the Epic-based platform.
In his prior role as President, Community Delivery Network, Dr. Hinchey drove strategy execution across the System’s community markets while ensuring alignment with UH’s mission, vision and values. He served as the executive leader for the community markets, with responsibility for operationalizing the system institute and service line strategy while overseeing business development, financial performance, and leadership recruitment and advancement.
Dr. Hinchey has more than 30 years of experience in clinical medicine, operations, business development, strategic planning and implementation, change management and medical affairs. Prior to joining UH, Dr. Hinchey served as Chief Strategy Officer and Senior Vice President of Business Development at Boulder Community Health, an independent healthcare system based in Boulder, CO. He also served in several leadership positions, including Chief Operating Officer of Medical Operations, with Envision Healthcare, a Denver-headquartered, Fortune 500, publicly traded healthcare services organization.
He is an established researcher, author and international lecturer on diverse topics such as quality assurance and care redesign, healthcare finance and systems of care, population health, post-acute care, as well as mobile and virtual clinical models. Dr. Hinchey has served on more than 15 boards and national committees in areas including hospital quality, hospice, ambulatory surgery centers, telemedicine and EMS. He has also received numerous awards for his leadership, teaching, service and clinical care.
Dr. Hinchey is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP).
He received his medical degree from the School of Medicine and Biomedical Science at State University of New York (SUNY), Buffalo; and his Master of Business Administration from the School of Management at SUNY, Buffalo. Dr. Hinchey completed his emergency medicine residency and EMS fellowship at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Dr. Hinchey resides in Pepper Pike with his wife. They have one adult son.
