Research Resources

The Center for Emergency Medicine’s Division of Research provides support, guidance, and resources for investigators to engage in a wide array of research collaboratives, programs, and projects. The Division of Research assists Emergency Medicine departments across the entire University Hospitals network from funding and IRB submission through execution, post-project reporting and dissemination. If you are interested in conducting research with our emergency medicine team, please contact us at EDresearch@UHhospitals.org to initiate the process. Our team assists all researchers including faculty, fellows, residents, medical students, graduate students, and undergraduate students in completing the steps to become a credentialed research associate at University Hospitals. Our team supports these associates through required training, background check, and the application process.

Regulatory Support

Our project managers (PMs) provide guidance and support for clinical research, clinical trials, quality improvement projects, etc. that take place in the adult emergency departments throughout University Hospitals. The PMs support the Emergency Medicine researchers and associates in, but not limited to, navigating an IRB submission, maintaining regulatory documents, and following federal, state, and institutional policies to remain compliant.

Biostatistical Support

Our department’s Biostatistician can assist in the composition of study design, analysis, and interpretation of research findings as well as data acquisition. This support extends to collaborative IRB applications, conference abstracts/posters, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.

Our team can assist with grant applications and submissions through federal, foundation, and local grants while also providing contacts and timelines for submissions. Furthermore, we have a great working relationship with University Hospital’s grants teams to help locate, obtain, and manage grant funding.

Pharmacy Services

Project DAWN (Deaths Avoided With Naloxone), coordinated by the Ohio Department of Health, is an education network for opioid overdose and naloxone distribution programs. Under UH Pharmacy leadership, our ED research team assists with planning and distributing Naloxone throughout the University Hospitals Emergency Departments and Northeast Ohio community events. Infectious Disease Clinical Trials Unit

During respiratory virus season, we collaborate with the Infectious Diseases Clinical Trials Unit (IDCTU) to facilitate the CORVETS (Cleveland Ohio Respiratory Viruses Vaccines Effectiveness across Traditional Risk Factors and Social Determinants of Health) public health surveillance program at five University Hospitals Emergency Departments (ED): UH Cleveland Medical Center, UH Ahuja Medical Center, UH St. John Medical Center, UH Portage Medical Center, and UH Parma Medical Center. This initiative’s purpose is to track and study natural immunity and effectiveness of vaccinations for flu and COVID-19. Our team facilitates each ED site’s engagement through communication, regulatory review, process mapping, site implementation, and operational oversight.

The John T. Carey Special Immunology Unit (SIU)

At University Hospitals, the John T. Carey Special Immunology Unit (SIU) provides comprehensive and compassionate HIV care, prevention, and screenings. The John T. Carey SIU collaborates directly with the Center for Emergency Medicine Team to link patients directly to care after their emergency visits and distribute harm reduction resources to Ohio's northeast region residents. The John T. Carey SIU provides a range of services, including HIV testing, a PrEP clinic and individual risk counseling for HIV prevention, comprehensive care and treatment for HIV positive patients, including both primary and specialty care, and a range of supportive services. University Hospitals Connor Whole Health

Since November 2024, UH Connor Whole Health integrative medicine providers have been in the UH Cleveland Medical Center Emergency Department evaluating and treating patients presenting with acute or chronic pain. Acupuncture and music therapy interventions are offered by professionals who are state licensed and/or board certified in these techniques to 1) maximize the practices’ effectiveness in the ED, 2) minimize patient risk, and 3) provide continuity for outpatient pain management sessions, if referred. UH Connor Whole Health practitioners perform their interventions on weekdays, during first shift, 4-5 days a week. The team has experience in conducting NIH funded clinical and implementation research of integrative medicine interventions in ED and acute care.

ThriveED

Since 2020, UH Cleveland Medical Center Emergency Department has partnered with the Cuyahoga community-based organization THRIVE Peer Recovery, which employs Certified Peer Recovery Supporters, to provide substance use disorder (SUD) treatment resources and direct referrals for ED patients in real time. The THRIVE team is available either in-person or by phone 24/7 at UH Cleveland Medical Center, UH Parma Medical Center, UH St. John Medical Center, and in the UH Management Services building alongside UH Emergency Psychiatry Access Team (EPAT). At UH Cleveland Medical Center and UH Ahuja Medical Center, THRIVE Peer Recovery Supporters work in conjunction with University Hospitals Substance Use Navigation Specialists (SUNS) in identifying patients, specifically patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and SUD, who need community resources and support and, assistance with logistics of obtaining care during and after their ED visit.
