Clinical Research and Education at University Hospitals Provide the Backbone for Innovation

At University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center’s Department of Orthopaedics Shoulder and Elbow Division in Cleveland, Ohio, the advancement of our practice through innovation, research and education is core to our department’s mission and values. Our dedication to the development of our field has earned our department numerous grants and awards. Most importantly, our patients can maintain confidence in our surgeons’ ability to deliver the most advanced care available, while remaining at the forefront of their specialty.

Surgeons at the Shoulder and Elbow Division are actively researching new ways to advance the techniques and technology used to treat even the most complex shoulder and elbow conditions. Current research at UH Cleveland Medical Center is focusing on the long-term impact of the materials and designs currently used in shoulder replacement surgery, a research initiative that has already won a considerable grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The goal is to determine how effective current methodologies and materials are when measured over a long period of time. This research will help physicians implement innovations that ensure the best possible long-term outcomes from surgery.

Currently, we have multiple prospective, funded clinical trials where we are continually examining ways to advance and optimize the care of our patients.

Educating Tomorrow’s Clinical and Surgical Leaders

Our emphasis on teaching springs from our responsibility to develop the future leaders in our field. Each of our surgeons is a faculty member at two internationally recognized institutions: Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Cleveland's Musculoskeletal Institute (MSI). Every year, we train 30 residents in the field of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. These men and women are selected from the top medical schools across the country.
