Diabetes Education Program

The University Hospitals Diabetes Education Program is committed to helping you or your loved one successfully live with diabetes. We offer a person-centered approach that is nationally recognized by the American Diabetes Association. The knowledgeable diabetes care and education specialist team at our UH Diabetes & Obesity Center is ready to partner with you to provide the support you need. We help bridge any gaps in knowledge and tailor a treatment plan that fits into your life and personal preferences.

By centering diabetes education and support services around problem-solving, reducing risks, monitoring, taking medication, healthy eating, healthy coping, and being active, the Diabetes Education Program helps people with diabetes to live long and healthy lives.

Diabetes Education Class Series

Group classes provide an effective and interactive learning peer-to-peer environment that engages participants in meaningful discussions around living with diabetes, healthy coping, and problem-solving for daily diabetes self-management. Compromised of four, one and half hour sessions, these classes are offered every other month on Tuesdays as a series of four classes with evening hours available.

Individual Diabetes Education Appointments

Individual consultations are available for all people living with diabetes in the in-person or telehealth format when preferred or when group classes are not available.

To learn more about individual appointments or group classes, call 216-286-8988. A physician referral is required.

Benefits of Diabetes Self-Management Education

Diabetes is a complex condition to manage day-to-day. Diabetes care and education specialists offer more than diabetes education, they are there to provide emotional support, identify ways to reduce diabetes stressors and burdens, and offer additional insights into your self-management plan.

The Program

Getting accurate information and having access to quality resources can be challenging. The UH Diabetes & Obesity Center wants to make this as easy as possible and is committed to increasing awareness and providing current information on managing diabetes.

Since 2002, the Diabetes Education Program has maintained recognition status by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). This prestigious certification ensures that diabetes education services occur in a high-quality, comprehensive program that meets the nationally established standards.

With a collaborative effort between the person with diabetes and the skilled diabetes care and education team, people with diabetes are empowered to take on diabetes self-management.
