Hearing aids are effective management for mild to moderate-severe hearing loss, yet studies show that only one in five people who would benefit from a hearing aid actually uses one. It has also been found that people with hearing loss wait an average of seven years before pursuing medical help.

Research has linked untreated hearing loss to an increased risk of falls, dementia, depression and Alzheimer’s disease. It has been reported that a patient’s psychosocial health as well as cognitive condition improved within three months of using a hearing aid.

Hearing Evaluation

When you come to University Hospitals for a hearing evaluation, one of our expert audiologists will conduct a comprehensive hearing test to determine if you are a candidate for hearing aids. Based on your evaluation, the audiologist may recommend hearing aids or make a referral to investigate medical or surgical options.

Hearing Aid Consultation

If you are a candidate for hearing aids, your audiologist will discuss the various styles, sizes and technology which are best suited for you. The choice of hearing aid styles and features is based on several factors, including the exact type and degree of hearing loss, your individual needs (such as communication requirements, lifestyle and manual dexterity), your medical and audiological history, and related findings.

Types of Hearing Aids

Hearing aid technology is available in a range of levels and price points, and UH offers a variety of cost-effective styles and competitive pricing.

Hearing aid styles may be broadly classified as “standard” or “custom.” Standard hearing aids include behind-the-ear (BTE), mini-BTE and receiver-in-the-canal (RIC) devices. These products are designed to fit most ears and usually require some customization of the earpiece and the connection of the device to the earpiece. Custom hearing aids include in-the ear (ITE), in-the-canal (ITC) and completely-in-the-canal (CIC). These products require a custom-molded shell that houses the electronics.

The majority of hearing aids are digital, which allows for the manipulation of sound in many useful ways. Some hearing aids are completely automatic, while others have user-adjustable controls. All hearing aids are powered by batteries, with both disposable and rechargeable battery options.

Hearing Aid Fitting

Approximately two to three weeks after your consultation, you will return for your fitting. This appointment lasts about one hour; proper use, care and maintenance will be explained to you. All hearing aid fittings are verified by formal tests to ensure maximum benefit. A follow-up visit will be scheduled within the 30-day trial period to fine tune the device, address concerns and answer your questions.

Insurance Coverage

Please check with your health insurance company to determine if you have hearing aid benefits. Traditional Medicare does not pay for hearing aids or hearing aid-related services. Financing options may be available if your insurance does not cover hearing aids; you can discuss these options with your audiologist during your consultation.
