Stomach Disorders

UH Experts Diagnose and Treat Diseases of the Stomach

The stomach is a J-shaped muscular organ located in the upper part of the abdomen. It is part of the human digestive system which is essentially one long tube that extends from the mouth to the anus. The stomach is the widest part of this tube or tract.

After food is chewed and swallowed it travels down the esophagus (food pipe) and enters the stomach where it is broken down by enzymes and acids so the nutrients can be extracted for use by the body – a process known as digestion. Food may be held in the stomach for several hours as it is processed, before the stomach muscles contract and push the food into the small intestine and ultimately the colon (large intestine) for further digestion. After usable nutrients and water are removed by use by the body, the undigested food is eliminated from the body as stool.

There are many diseases and conditions that can affect the stomach and lead to common complaints such as indigestion or more complex diseases such as stomach cancer. The multidisciplinary team of digestive health experts at University Hospitals can diagnose and treat the full spectrum of diseases and conditions that affect the stomach, from the most common to the most complex. Working together, our team will develop a treatment plan for each patient that will give them the best chance for an optimal outcome.

In-Person and Virtual Appointments Available

At University Hospitals we offer the convenience of both in-person and virtual consultations. For many patients, a virtual appointment may be ideal, offering the following benefits:

  • Prompt evaluation and treatment. Virtual consults are scheduled within 24-48 hours after you contact us so the most effective treatment(s) for you can be determined and quickly begin. Establishing a trusting relationship with one of our specialists, understanding your options and being involved in your own treatment decisions can help reduce anxiety throughout your treatment and recovery journey.
  • Convenience. With a virtual consult there is no need to travel. You can talk to one of our specialists from the comfort of your own home or office.
  • Affordable. Virtual consultations are among the most affordable options for care, costing about the same as a traditional office visit copay. All major insurance plans are accepted.
  • Second opinion consults available. If you have already spoken to a doctor about your treatment options, it is always beneficial to get a second opinion. UH virtual consultations are offered for both initial and second opinion appointments.
