Pediatric Optometry Services and Vision Care
The pediatric optometry team at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s offers more than just routine eye exams. Our skilled pediatric optometrists focus on the medical aspect of vision care, because we understand how important the eyes are to the whole body’s health, and how vision complications can arise as a result of disease.
We work closely with the pediatric ophthalmologists within our department to develop individualized treatment plans for patients with eye- and vision-related conditions. Our experienced pediatric optometrists provide comprehensive medical eye exams, follow-up care for post-surgical patients, and co-management of various pediatric eye diseases and conditions.

Juvenile Myopia Management
Experts predict that half the U.S. population will be myopic (near-sighted) by the year 2050. Today, juvenile myopia is also being diagnosed younger and is advancing more quickly. The biggest predictor of juvenile myopia is having myopic parents, while other risk factors such as demographics, geographical location, lifestyle, premature birth, and access to healthcare also play a role in myopia development.
At UH Rainbow, our management of juvenile myopia is informed by the latest research on myopia and incorporates services for families that want to be proactive in slowing and reducing the risk of myopia progression. We offer a range of services that can be personalized for each patient and adjusted based on how each child responds to treatment.
UH Rainbow is recognized as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), reserved for hospitals that meet the highest standards for quality care, safety, staffing, training, data collection and infrastructure. This quality indicator means that we are focused to prevent complications, hold down costs and improve patient outcomes.
