Activities that Promote Healthy Living for Children with Cancer
A cancer or blood disorder diagnosis for a child can translate into missing typical childhood experiences that are often taken for granted. Due to treatment and other changes to their bodies or daily routines, some children may find it challenging to participate in sports teams and athletic events with their friends and family. However, exercise and activity can lead to a healthier lifestyle for children – physically and emotionally – and often aid young cancer and blood disorder patients and survivors in their development.
Iris S. & Bert L. Wolstein's HOPE – Healthy Outcomes, Positive Energy program at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s is a targeted program that encourages young patients and survivors of cancer and blood disorders to be active and recognize the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating. The Iris S. & Bert L. Wolstein's Helping Kids with Cancer program is free and welcomes children and adolescents, either on or off cancer treatment, no matter where they receive medical care. With coaching from professional and collegiate sports players, and games involving the patients’ doctors and nurses, Iris S. & Bert L. Wolstein's HOPE – Healthy Outcomes, Positive Energy offers participants access to a series of clinics and events and the chance to safely enjoy activity and life.
Support and Community Through Sports
It can be hard for patients and families affected by childhood cancer or blood disorders to meet others who share a similar experience. When these kids have the chance to play together through sports, they are able to bond with other children in a familiar situation. These connections and experiences can go a long way toward improving the child’s overall wellbeing.
Through clinics and events, Iris S. & Bert L. Wolstein's HOPE – Healthy Outcomes, Positive Energy participants have the opportunity to learn new skills, gain confidence, feel like they belong and make new friends.
Free Nutrition and Athletic Skills Clinics
It’s important for children with a cancer or blood disorder diagnosis to lead a healthy active lifestyle. This can improve their growth and development, minimize potential complications and reduce the risk of late effects, like heart problems.
Iris S. & Bert L. Wolstein's HOPE – Healthy Outcomes, Positive Energy program offers a series of athletic sports clinics (soccer, basketball, golf, swimming and more) as well as cooking, nutrition and cancer prevention clinics. These dietary innovation and exercise programs encourage year-round fitness and wellness at home. We also provide activities for children receiving inpatient care at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
The Iris S. & Bert L. Wolstein's HOPE – Healthy Outcomes, Positive Energy program is free of charge and welcomes children and adolescents, either on or off treatment, no matter where they receive medical care.
