We are a host institution with the AAMC-VSLO program to schedule electives. Your application should be completed through VSLO. Please note that our elective rotations are open first to our affiliated Case Western Reserve University Medical School students. Visiting student applications are batched and sent to each department.
Please see our Application Timeline for important dates
Your hospital orientation will be scheduled for the 1st day of your rotation. Look for emails from your academic coordinator stating exactly who and where you will need to meet. Students will be given a brief orientation to the hospital, receive their hospital identification badge and be directed to their department.
Due to the limited duration of any rotation, attendance is mandatory. Should an emergency arise, it is a departmental decision whether or not it is excused. Excessive absences will not be excused. All absences will be reflected in the student's grade.
Each day there are a variety of departmental lectures, conferences and teaching activities and students rotating at UH Cleveland Medial Center are encouraged to attend. Schedules are available in each department and on the University Hospital's intranet. As long as the lecture does not interfere with student duties, students are welcome to attend any program of interest.
It is expected that medical students will complete the elective that they have scheduled. We realize that extenuating circumstances arise and students may need to cancel their elective but it is unfair to our faculty, house staff and other students who were unable to schedule electives. If there is an emergency cancellation, please let us know at least six (6) weeks in advance, in writing, either via email or postal mail, stating that the elective will not be completed. Application processing fees are non-refundable.
You will receive your ID Badge at the orientation. Students must wear their ID badge at all times while at any of the University Hospitals locations.
UH Cleveland Medical Center does not provide malpractice insurance to medical students. Students need to provide a copy of their malpractice insurance policy with their application. Most schools provide students with this insurance. If a student's school does not provide malpractice coverage while on an elective rotation, students must purchase a personal policy and provide proof of coverage prior to beginning their rotation.
UH Cleveland Medical Center utilizes Allscripts for our electronic medical records. We use Allscripts Sunrise for the inpatient documentation and Allscripts Ambulatory Electronic Medical Record (AEMR) for outpatient records. There are separate Allscript training sessions for inpatient and outpatient computer work. The Community Record locator also provides data regarding outpatient care. The Ohio Health Information Exchange is a data repository for care provided throughout the state.
All students are required to complete the UH Cleveland Medical Center HIPAA Training. This is necessary even if they have received training at their school. UH Cleveland Medical Center has specific policies and procedures unique to the hospital. Students will not be allowed to participate in patient care or their elective until they have completed this training.
It is the student's responsibility to provide the Visiting Medical Student Education Office with the medical school's official evaluation form and appropriate forwarding information. If available electronically, forward the URL to the our Visiting Student Coordinator.
Grading Procedure
The Visiting Student Education Office requires that a Performance Evaluation be on file in the program's office before the student leaves his/her elective. Each Department will assign an attending or resident physician as the student's evaluator. The student will meet with the assigned physician who will complete the evaluation and return it to the student. The student will then submit it to the Visiting Student Education Office and complete an Exit Interview.
