Pediatricians Achieve Specialized Clinical Training in Psychiatry with Post Pediatric Portal Program
Since 2007, the Post Pediatric Portal Program at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center has provided training in general and child/adolescent psychiatry for board-eligible and board-certified pediatricians who decide to seek training in psychiatry.
The Post Pediatric Portal Program provides a 36-month training experience that meets the requirements for board certification in both general psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry. With over 1000 licensed bed, UH Cleveland Medical Center provides a rich and broad setting in which to learn. At this time, there are two training positions per year. Recruitment for next year's class is currently underway.
The training program for general psychiatry and the fellowship program for child and adolescent psychiatry work together to provide a training experience for graduates of residencies in pediatrics, designed to meet the requirements as set forth by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for eligibility for both general and child/adolescent psychiatry board certification.
In the first year of training, portal residents fulfill requirements for inpatient general and child/adolescent psychiatry, as well as required training in consultation-liaison for adults and for children and adolescents. All training is done with residents and fellows who are participating in the traditional training tracks. The second and third years of training are focused on outpatient care, both adult and pediatric.
Didactics during the first 18 months are with the general psychiatry residents. During the second 18 months, portal residents participate in the didactics with the child and adolescent fellows.
Supervision is provided according to the standards of both the general psychiatry and child/adolescent fellowship. On-call responsibilities are divided equally between the general and child/adolescent program, with the first 12 months on adult psychiatry call and second 12 months on child/adolescent call.
For the third year, the portal fellows have no call.
