About the Pharmacy

UH Samaritan Medical Center

University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center is a 55-staffed-bed acute care facility located between Cleveland and Columbus. UH Samaritan Medical Center is the only hospital in Ashland County and also serves Mansfield and Loudonville areas. Our main hospital facility includes a 24/7 emergency department, a medical/surgical unit, an intensive care unit, and a low-risk cath lab. UHSMC offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient services.

UH Samaritan Medical Center Pharmacy Department is not open 24 hours/day. The pharmacy department does operate seven days a week with the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Omnicell automated dispensing cabinets are utilized for medication storage and inventory control in the pharmacy and on the nursing units. Pharmacy services include medication procurement, storage, repackaging, dispensing, distribution, controlled substance services, sterile product preparation, drug information, drug interaction, medication reconciliation, and monitoring of drug therapy.


Residency Overview

UH Samaritan Medical Center offers one 52-week PGY1 resident position that will expose the resident to the many aspects of community hospital pharmacy. The residency focuses on developing confident, engaged, well-rounded pharmacists. The resident will have the opportunity to conduct pharmacy practice-based research, function as a member of an integrated pharmacy team, and further define our practice model. As a department, we are dedicated to serving the needs of our patients through our innovative approach and patient-centered care. The purpose of this PGY1 pharmacy residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education. The goals of this program are to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists to successfully practice as an acute care pharmacist, adjunct faculty member and/or be prepared to pursue and complete a post-graduate year 2 (PGY2) residency training as well as pharmacotherapy board certification.

Teaching

As a resident at UH Samaritan Medical Center, you will participate in the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) teaching certificate program. Through this program, the resident will provide in-class lectures, prepare online lectures and develop test questions. In addition to the teaching certificate, the resident will give occasional lectures to pharmacy staff, nursing staff, and community members.

Research Project

To foster the importance of evidence-based practices, the resident will complete a longitudinal research project. The resident will be responsible for gaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, developing the methods, analyzing the results and presenting the findings.
