How to Apply
Thank you for your interest in applying for open pathology residency positions in the UH/CWRU Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. In addition to residency program information within this section of our website, information about our community, University Circle, is also available. All applications are reviewed in the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and other forms of application will not be considered.
Qualifications
Our program strives to train residents who are distinguished by their excellent fund of recent medical knowledge, effective communication skills, and commitment to a career in pathology. Qualifications that are considered in evaluating an application include the following:
- Letters of recommendation (three)
- Medical school transcripts
- Postgraduate activities
- USMLE Board scores
Because many criteria are considered, it is not possible to give a meaningful "cut-off" for Board scores alone but failed attempts and scores below the 80th percentile are becoming unacceptable in the more competitive programs.
Requirements
Step one CK & CS and Step two are required to apply; Step three is not required but can be important if there is a failure on one of the other examinations. However, a failure on one of the exams does not necessarily exclude a candidate with strong credentials.
Application Submission
Please submit your application through the ERAS website.
Foreign Medical School Graduates
Graduates of foreign medical schools must have completed their certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) before application. Our program sponsors non-U.S. residents for J-1 visa status only. We will not interview candidates who do not have the ECFMG certification with their application.
Other Educational Credentials
Clinical experience is not required to apply for the program. Other educational credentials, such as a PhD or Master's, are more desirable although not necessary. Publications in peer-reviewed journals can help to improve a candidate's application.
Interviews
Approximately 75 candidates are invited to interview each year to fill approximately six PGY1 positions. The residency committee evaluates all of the interviewed candidates to select the incoming class. Interviews are offered on a rolling basis, so applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible to avoid the interview schedule filling before the application is received. In previous years, the interview schedule has filled by January of the year in which training is to begin.
Again, we thank you for your interest and wish you the best of luck in your search for a suitable residency position.
