Workshops
Rotating courses are offered to residents in the Otolaryngology Residency Program over an annual cycle, providing intense instruction in particularly important or difficult topics. These include:
- Head and neck surgical anatomy and dissections
- Laryngeal anatomy and surgery
- Myocutaneous flap anatomy and reconstructive flap surgery
- Paranasal sinus anatomy and endoscopic surgery
Head and Neck Surgical Anatomy and Dissections
Otolaryngology residents have the opportunity to dissect fresh cadavers in this unique course taught by head and neck attendings. Principles of basic anatomy as well as surgical technique are reinforced through demonstrations and hands-on practice of neck dissections, thyroidectomies, tracheostomies and local flaps.
Temporal Bone Course
Principles of temporal bone anatomy and surgical skills are developed in our state-of-the-art Temporal Bone Surgical Anatomy Laboratory. Ten stations with individual microscopes and drills are available to residents year-round. An intense course is given each year for 10 weeks during which each resident dissects several temporal bones with careful supervision from otology faculty. At the end of each course, each resident submits a temporal bone for competition, with feedback and teaching on surgical technique and exposure of critical structures.
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Paranasal Sinus Anatomy
The full-time rhinology faculty gives a review of the endoscopic anatomy of the paranasal sinuses. This intensive course, using hands-on cadaver dissections, is an essential element in learning the immensely popular and successful technique of endoscopic sinus surgery.
Microscopic Laryngoscopy and Laryngeal
This workshop allows hands-on practice with microdirect laryngoscopy, CO2 laser ablation, vocal cord injections and vocal cord medialization.
Facial Aesthetics, Fillers and Injectables
Faculty in our facial plastics department provide a unique workshop including lectures and demonstrations of aesthetic injectables in volunteer patients. Residents then have the opportunity to inject Botox® and Restylane® in volunteer patients with immediate feedback and teaching from attendings.
Microvascular, Trauma, Ultrasound and Plating
Residents, proctored by our head and neck reconstructive attendings, practice performing a microvascular anastomosis in animal and synthetic models, perform ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and perform stimulated mandibular and midface osteotomies, as well as facial fracture stabilization with rigid fixation. It is a comprehensive course that is given to the residents during protected time once a year.
