University Hospitals (UH) is the second-largest employer in Northeast Ohio with more than 28,000 employees. The organization serves the patients’ needs through an integrated network of 18 hospitals, over 50 outpatient health centers, 2,500 employed physicians, and primary care physician offices in 16 counties. At the core of its $4.5 billion health system is University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, ranked among America’s 50 best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report in multiple methodology-ranked specialties and designated as a Magnet© recognized facility by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. University Hospitals Partnership with Case Western Reserve University

University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have a long-standing relationship dating back to 1895. Currently, UH has a multi-affiliate standing, similar to other hospitals and health systems associated with the School of Medicine. All UH physicians in University Hospitals Medical Group are eligible for a primary faculty appointment at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine. It is anticipated that this multi-affiliate relationship and the nature of faculty positions will remain unchanged moving forward.

University Hospitals Academics Overview

The UH Research & Education Institute> (UH R&E) is the primary entity that oversees academics for the entire health system including basic/translational, clinical and population health research and undergraduate and graduate medical education. The total UH research portfolio in 2019 was $161 million in sponsored funding representing a mix of federal ($83 million), non-federal ($16 million), and clinical trial activities ($62 million).

UH continues to serve as a leading entity in training the next generation of physicians, scientists, and allied health professionals. UH faculty oversee nearly 60% of first and second-year medical student education for Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In addition, over 400 medical students perform their 3rd and 4th-year clinical rotations at UH. Every year more than 1000 residents/fellows and nearly 1100 allied health professionals train at UH.
