The fellow will be responsible for clinical rotations at least 3.5 days per week in the following sub-specialty rotations.

  • Adult General Orthopedics - Joint Replacement and Orthopedic Trauma
  • Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery
  • Inpatient Consults (PM&R/Ortho/Rheum) and MSK Radiology  (1/2 months)
  • Orthopaedic Sports Surgery
  • Pain Management
  • Primary Care Sports Medicine
  • Rheumatology
  • Spine Surgery (Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical)
  • Medical Spine (2 mo)
  • Electives (2 mo)

The fellow will get year-long exposure to fluoro-guided injections with our PM&R/Spine providers about once per week. In addition, the fellow will staff their own continuity clinic with indirect supervision after the first two months. Opportunities in continuity clinic include common ultrasound-guided procedures and acute injury/spine pain evaluations. For this reason, a full license to practice medicine in the State of Ohio is required.

The Physical and Occupation Therapy Experience will include two half-days per month (eight hours) in therapy centers working expertise in the corresponding clinical area.  They will be encouraged to follow patients whom they have seen in the physician’s clinics. The fellow will learn appropriate referral patterns and the scope of treatment available in these disciplines.

The fellow will not be directly responsible for supervising residents or medical students, but may be assigned to such a role as part of team dynamics in individual rotations.

Fellows have the opportunity to train at a variety of University Hospitals medical and health centers including UH Cleveland Medical Center, UH Ahuja Medical Center, UH Westlake Health Center, UH St. John Health Center, UH Parma Medical Center, UH Concord Health Center, UH Broadview Heights Health Center, UH Medina Health Center and UH Suburban Health Center.

Research

A research or related academic project (of some kind) will be required.  This could include a single research project, clinical case series, chart review, or laboratory study.  Continuation of previous research work would also fulfill this requirement, upon approval of the director.  Instead of research, the fellow may volunteer for a substantial resident or medical student teaching duties (i.e. to develop a new educational program.  The fellow will be expected to submit one interesting case study which involves musculoskeletal ultrasound to a major peer-reviewed journal or present at a national meeting.

Didactic Components

The fellow will attend the Orthopaedics Grand rounds, the spine conferences, and the Ultrasound didactics with the sports medicine fellows.  In addition, they will attend sub-specialty rotation didactics when they are on that rotation.  They will also have the option of attending the PM&R residency and pain management didactic programs after approval by the program director.

Evaluation

The fellow’s performance on each rotation will be evaluated via the MyEvaluations APP.  The rotation director will be responsible for ensuring that the evaluations are complete. The Program Director or designee will evaluate the fellow’s performance in their continuity and injection clinics on a quarterly basis.

Funding

The fellowship will be self-funded with revenue generated by the fellow’s continuity and ultrasound-guided injection clinics. The fellow will be appointed as Associate staff in Orthopaedics and perform independent billing for these clinics.
