Neurocritical Care Fellowship at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University

Department of Neurology Medical Education

Welcome from the Program Director

Our Neurocritical Care Center provides around-the-clock management for critically ill patients with acute neurological and neurosurgical conditions. Our multidisciplinary team includes fellowship-trained neurology and neurosurgery neurointensivists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, physical and respiratory therapists, and social workers. This integrated approach centralizes patient care, utilizing evidence-based pathways to enhance quality, safety, and patient satisfaction while reducing costs and treatment variability. Our Neurocritical Care Fellowship is dedicated to preparing physicians for excellence in the comprehensive, multisystem care of critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients while fostering their development as future leaders in the field of Neurocritical Care.

Education and Research

Dr. De Georgia teaching studentsEducation and research are integral to our mission. We support the education of medical students, residents, and fellows from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals. Our neurology residency program is the second largest in the U.S., and we collaborate with other educational institutions in Northeast Ohio to enrich their learners’ experiences.

A Legacy of Excellence in Neurocritical Care

University Hospitals has a proud history of neurocritical care leadership:

Dr. David Jackson
Dr. David Jackson was recognized as the first neurointensivist in America. After training at Johns Hopkins, he became the Director of UHCMC’s medical intensive care unit in 1975, focusing his research on anoxic brain injury following cardiac arrest. In 1978, he developed the first American Academy of Neurology course on Critical Care Neurology.
Critical Care Neurology and Neurosurgery
Dr. Jose Suarez, NSU Director from 1996 to 2006, authored Critical Care Neurology and Neurosurgery, a foundational textbook in the field. He also established the Neurocritical Care fellowship in 1998.
Neurocritical Care Informatics
Since becoming NSU Director in 2007, I have built on this legacy. After serving as Director of Neurocritical Care at the Cleveland Clinic, my research has focused on induced hypothermia, multi-modal monitoring, and neurocritical care informatics. I co-authored Neurocritical Care Informatics in 2019, and under my leadership, the fellowship achieved accreditation through the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties in 2008 and transitioned to ACGME accreditation in 2022.

We remain dedicated to training the next generation of neurocritical care specialists and advancing outcomes for critically ill patients with neurological and neurosurgical diseases.
