Safe Start Exercise Program
Safe Start is a healthcare provider-referred exercise program for those who may have special health needs or simply want to jumpstart healthy habits. This program is offered at our Fitness Center at University Hospitals Brunner Sanden Deitrick Wellness Center in Mentor. In Safe Start, participants will work towards their goals with the support of healthcare providers and fitness experts.
Referred patients will participate in this guided program in person at the fitness center. You'll start by completing a fitness consultation and participating in either structured exercise programs in a group setting or exercising independently outside of the group if preferred. Healthy lifestyle changes can be difficult, and training in a group setting can build a great community for support. You'll have full access to fitness center equipment, amenities, pools and programs during all hours of operation throughout your 60-days.

-
Wear loose, comfortable exercise clothes and workout shoes. We also recommend bringing a towel and water bottle.
- How often am I eligible for Safe Start?
-
Once every 24 months. The exceptions are individuals that are planning on having surgery or giving birth. These individuals are eligible for Safe Start prior to and again after their event. These participants need to be cleared for exercise from a physician. Often, those who go into surgery strong have much better outcomes, and we highly encourage you to take advantage of this program.
- What if I’m already a member of the fitness center?
-
If you’re already a member of the Fitness Center at UH Brunner Sanden Deitrick Wellness Center, simply stop by the Fitness Desk on the first floor of our facility and talk to an Exercise Specialist. Current members do not need a physician referral and there is no charge for you to take advantage of these additional resources.

Your physician or healthcare provider will receive intermittent updates about your progress through the Safe Start program. Our Safe Start Coaches will deliver the updates. If there are additional providers that you’d like to know about your progress, please let a Coach know.
