Community Outreach and Assistance at UH St. John Medical Center
The Community Outreach Department was established in 1998 to promote health and wellness in the communities we serve. The department is funded by University Hospitals St. John Medical Center, grant support, Hospital Auxiliary donations, The Westside Health Organization, Celebrate Westlake and private donors.
Outreach Programs
The following services can be provided in community centers, schools, senior centers, churches and for other community groups by request.

- Germ Prevention and Handwashing (class for elementary school children)
Additional Health Fair Activities
Interactive Healthy & Safety Displays tailored for school-aged children for their health and safety concerns (i.e. exercise: hula hoops, jump ropes; risky behaviors: tattoos, smoking, drinking and drugs, etc.)
Health Talks
We offer round table discussions with a panel of health experts discussing current health topics. Several of these talks are listed in our Health Event Calendars by topic (i.e. cardiovascular, diabetes, stroke, etc.)
Support Groups
We facilitate and/or host dozens of health related support groups (e.g., breastfeeding, breast cancer, bereavement, ADHD, mood disorders, caregivers support group, respiratory and lung support, Gamblers Anonymous, Overeater’s Anonymous).
Walk for Wellness!
In a collaborative effort, Great Northern Mall and UH St. John Medical Center are providing an ongoing mall walking program. A free health talk by a UH St. John Medical Center healthcare professional is offered, along with blood pressure screenings by a Community Outreach nurse.
Bring It On!
A six-week senior walking and wellness challenge.
Continuing Education
We partner with local non-profit healthcare facilities and organizations to provide free CE opportunities for health professionals.
LifeShare Blood Donations
We arrange blood drives in partnership with LifeShare Community Blood Services. The blood drives take place from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at UH St. John Medical Center, Building 2, first floor, Auditorium B. For more information or for other locations, visit www.lifeshare.cc or call 866-644-Life (5433).
Community Assistance
To reach our free community assistance line, just dial 2-1-1. This confidential information and referral line is run by the United Way. Call 211 for help finding health and social services in your area, including local support groups, resources for food, housing, and employment, counseling, and volunteer opportunities.
Low-Cost Immunization Clinic
We provide space for the weekly Cuyahoga County Board of Health Low Cost Immunization Clinic, on Fridays from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This is by appointment only by calling 216-201-2041.
Youth Challenge
Youth Challenge provides adapted sports and recreational opportunities to children with physical disabilities. Trained teen volunteers are paired one-on-one with participants to play, socialize and have fun. Health Care Access
Our social worker assists the uninsured and underinsured with their healthcare challenges by linking them with appropriate resources including (but not limited to) prescription assistance programs. Program referrals can be made by anyone, including community agencies, churches and physician offices. Contact us at 440-925-0010.
Senior Supper Club
Seniors can eat at UH St. John Medical Center’s Terrace View Cafe (cafeteria) for a 45 percent discount with their Senior Supper Club card. Supper times are Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 4 – 5:30 p.m.
Anyone over the age of 60 can apply for a Senior Supper Club card. Simply pick up a card from the Westlake Center for Community Services or North Olmsted Senior Center. Then bring your card to the Terrace View Cafe at UH St. John Medical Center for a 45 percent discount on all food (except bottled beverages and “Simply to Go” items). There is a $10 limit per customer for the discount; after that the items are full price.

Deaf Access Program (DAP)
DAP promotes and teaches deaf people self-advocacy skills to improve both access and quality of their healthcare. DAP provides an on-site deaf advocate and American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter to deaf and hard-of-hearing patients around the clock. The program teaches cultural and linguistic diversity among caregivers. For information, call 216-370-7318.
Prescription Drop-Off Box
You can safely dispose of old, leftover or expired medications without harming the environment. Prescription Drug Drop Boxes are located at the Bay Village, Fairview Park, Lakewood, North Olmsted, Rocky River and Westlake police departments. Any medications with the exception of liquids or syringes can be dropped off. Simply blackout your information with a permanent marker or remove the labels. This effort helps with the prevention of prescription drug abuse and crime and also helps keep our environment safe. Contact your local police department for more information.

Concussion Management Program for Student Athletes
If your child suffers a head injury playing sports, you want to make sure he or she is safe before returning to play. UH St. John Medical Center offers student athletes the opportunity to establish a balance function baseline with a $20 test. Taking this step before injury creates an invaluable reference point for measuring injury impact, results in a faster and more successful rehabilitation, and provides objective information to help clinicians make safe return-to play decisions.
