Everybody’s talking about Ozempic. The new GLP-1 agonist medications (like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound, semaglutide and others) are the best medications we have ever had to fight obesity. But are these meds really the answer? Skilled surgeons around the world and right here at UH have been performing safe, effective and durable bariatric surgeries to promote weight loss and improve obesity-related disease like diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease and acid reflux for over 50 years. But still, only about 1 percent of eligible patients are getting bariatric surgery.

We’ll discuss why peoples struggling with their weight seem to be more comfortable trying out new medications, despite a laundry list of side effects and the prospect of weight regain when they stop taking those meds. Join UH bariatric surgeon Linden Karas, MD, and Kathleen Murtha, CNP, to learn more about the pros and cons of medications and surgery to treat obesity.
