Our Mission
To Heal. To Teach. To Discover. University Hospitals’ mission echoes throughout UH Seidman Cancer Center and the Department of Radiation Oncology.
What Makes Us Different?
We are proud to be the only center in Cleveland and among only a few centers worldwide to offer stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiotherapy, intra-operative radiotherapy, low-dose, and high-dose-rate brachytherapy, total skin electron therapy, total body radiotherapy, proton beam therapy, and radiopharmaceutical therapy with radium-223 and Lutetium-177 PSMA. Less than 5% of the centers worldwide offer this comprehensive array of radiation treatment options. These technologies represent a sizable investment to ensure our patients have access to the latest technologies. However, this is only half of the equation to receiving a successful course of radiation therapy. Comprised of experts in planning and delivering radiotherapy, we require exquisite precision from our incredible radiation therapists, dosimetrists, and medical physicists.
One of the only healthcare organizations to be ranked in the top 10 organizations that excel in diversity and inclusion.
Modern Healthcare recognized ten organizations that have bolstered the diversity of their workforces, including the leadership and governance ranks. UH was one of the only hospital systems to make the list. Over 50% of our department leadership is female, and over 15% of our physicians are underrepresented in medicine.
One of only 38 centers in the USA to offer proton beam therapy
The significant advantage of proton therapy treatment over standard radiation therapy is that protons slowly deposit their energy as they travel towards the cancerous tumor, and then due to a unique physical characteristic called the Bragg Peak, deposit the majority of the radiation dose directly in the tumor and travel no further through the body.
One of 53 NCI-Designated Cancer Centers
Of the nearly 900 cancer centers in the USA, only 53 have achieved NCI-designated status as a comprehensive cancer center. This is based on excellence in scientific leadership, resources, and the depth and breadth of their research in basic, clinical, and prevention, cancer control, and population science. The comprehensive cancer center was one of the few that received “exceptional” status.
