LSVT Therapy Helps Improve Speech and Movement for Parkinson’s Patients

LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Training) therapy has been proven successful in helping patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions regain functions that may have been affected by their condition, including speech and motor functions. University Hospitals Rehabilitation Services offers two LSVT therapy programs – LSVT LOUD^® speech therapy and LSVT BIG occupational and physical therapy.

LSVT LOUD for Improved Speech

LSVT LOUD is an effective speech treatment for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions. LSVT LOUD improves voice loudness by stimulating the muscles of the voice box (larynx) and speech mechanisms through a systematic hierarchy of exercises.

Focused on a single goal “speak LOUD” – treatment improves respiratory, laryngeal and articulatory function to maximize speech intelligibility. The treatment does not train people for shouting or yelling; rather, LSVT LOUD uses loudness training to bring the voice to an improved, healthy vocal loudness with no strain.

Many of our UH speech language pathologists are certified in LSVT LOUD.

LSVT BIG for Increased Mobility

Additionally, UH offers LSVT BIG as an effective occupational or physical therapy treatment for Parkinson’s disease and other conditions. LSVT BIG improves a person’s mobility by using repetitive, large movements coordinated with voice training.

Many of our UH occupational therapists are certified in LSVT BIG training.
