Compassionate Gynecology Care for Teens
We realize that teens have unique care needs. That’s why the adolescent and pediatric gynecology team at University Hospitals offers compassionate healthcare specifically designed for teens.
We start by listening carefully to each young patient. Our team addresses menstrual and related health concerns, as well as any emotional changes she may be experiencing.
Age-Appropriate Exams and Treatment
At University Hospitals, the adolescent gynecology team works closely with UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s pediatric specialists to treat young patients with conditions of the uterus, ovaries and breast. In some cases, our pediatric specialists will refer a patient to our adolescent gynecology team for concerns about gynecologic health.
Our team proactively checks for hormonal problems such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We also follow the latest clinical guidelines for PAP smear tests and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine:
- A pap test should be performed once a young woman reaches the age of 21.
- The human papillomavirus vaccine, which protects against cancers caused by HPV, is provided based on national guidelines.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Diagnosis and Treatment
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal problems that affects teen girls and women. Although it is a chronic condition that tends to run in families, PCOS is treatable. Polycystic ovary syndrome symptoms usually appear at puberty, so University Hospitals gynecologists team up with pediatric endocrinologists to diagnose PCOS early.
