Microdose Lupron
Storage: Store bacteriostatic sodium chloride and leuprolide kit at room temperature until ready to use. Store in the refrigerator following reconstitution/mixing.
Special Considerations: Note date of mixing – discard 28 days after mixing. Rotate injection sites.
Dosage and Timing: 20 units twice per day (morning and evening).
Supplies: 1 vial of leuprolide acetate, 1 vial of bacteriostatic sodium chloride, 1 mL syringe with 25 gauge 1 inch needle to mix medication, BD insulin syringe microfine 28 gauge ½ inch 0.5mL to inject medication, alcohol swabs.
Instructions:
- Wash your hands and work on a clean, dry surface.
- Flip off the plastic flip-caps from both vials and wipe both rubber stoppers with an alcohol swab.
- Using the 1 mL syringe with 25 gauge 1 inch needle, pull back the plunger to 0.5 mL mark (please note, only air is being drawn into the syringe at this step. It does not have to be exactly 0.5 mL, it’s OK if it is less. You are not drawing up any medication at this point.)
- Push the needle through the rubber stopper into the leuprolide vial.
- Depress plunger to inject air into the leuprolide vial.
- Keeping the needle in the vial, turn the leuprolide vial upside down, keeping the needle tip below the surface of liquid.
- Slowly pull the plunger back to the 0.5 mL mark on the syringe, drawing leuprolide into the syringe.
- Inject the 0.5 mL of leuprolide into the bacteriostatic sodium chloride. This is now your medication vial. All leuprolide doses will be withdrawn from this vial.
- Using the provided insulin syringe, draw up 20 units for injection.
Administration
- Choose an injection site on your abdomen (see image).
- Clean the area with an alcohol swab and allow to dry.
- Pinch up the skin.
- Insert the needle straight into the skin – do not go in at an angle.
- Push the plunger all the way down, making sure the syringe is empty.
