ALS Neurology

The ALS program utilizes an interdisciplinary approach by bringing together specialists from the Neuromuscular Center, rehabilitative services (such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy/pathology), surgery and pulmonary medicine in order to optimize patient care and comfort.

Diaphragmatic stimulation and pacing is an integral part of managing respiratory failure in ALS patients. The NeuRx Diaphragmatic Pacing System was pioneered at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center under the direction of Raymond Onders, MD and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The device helps patients breathe and speak more normally and it helps stave off respiratory complications during the progression of ALS. It was also used to successfully treat patients with spinal cord injury such as the late actor Christopher Reeve in March 2003.

The ALS program of University Hospitals is located at University Hospitals Foley ElderHealth Center. The ALS multidisciplinary clinic offers patients access to multiple services in a single visit to maximize the continuity of care and provide the highest possible quality of life. We also offer state-of-the-art infusion services for ALS patients at UH Specialty Clinic Infusion Center in Warrensville Heights.

Patients also have access to the services of the Northern Ohio Chapter of the ALS Association which is located in Cleveland and may include use of communication devices, loan of medical equipment and respite care.
