The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that there are 1.2 million persons infected with HIV in the U.S., one in seven (13 percent) of whom are not aware of their infection. Approximately 40,000 new people are infected with HIV annually in the U.S. In Cuyahoga County, over 5,000 people are known to be infected with HIV, with 150 – 200 new infections annually.
The majority of new infections are acquired from individuals unaware of their HIV status. Therefore, the CDC recommends that everyone should have an HIV test as a part of routine medical care, and repeated annually if the person is at risk, such as having a new sexual partner or sharing needles.
