Cheek Fillers & Implants Offer a Balanced, More Youthful Facial Appearance

Cheek enhancements such as fillers and implants are surgical procedures designed to highlight or emphasize the cheekbones, creating a more proportioned and balanced facial appearance. Older patients with sunken cheeks can achieve a fuller, more youthful look with surgical cheek enhancements, and younger patients can achieve the appearance of stronger, more defined cheekbones.

Types of Cheek Enhancements

There are two main procedures used to enhance the appearance of the cheeks:

  • Implants. To augment the cheek (malar) region, UH plastic surgeons may place a solid implant over the cheekbone. A variety of materials can be used for the implant, however silicone implants are the most frequently used.
  • Fillers. We may use injectable filler materials to plump up the cheeks such as Restylane® or Juvederm® or the patient’s own fat.

Ideal Candidates for Cheek Enhancements

Ideal candidates are those who want definition of the face, particularly in the cheek (malar) region. Candidates should be in good physical and emotional health and not allergic to the implant material or the fillers. Patients are counseled to ensure they have realistic expectations of the results of the procedure.

Performing Cheek Enhancement Surgery

Cheek enhancement procedures typically take 1 to 1.5 hours and are performed as an outpatient procedure under deep sedation or general anesthesia.

Patients can expect to have a noticeable amount of post-operative swelling lasting 1 to 2 weeks on average. Strenuous activities should be avoided for three weeks after the surgery and patients will be advised to avoid consumption of aspirin and NSAIDS for three weeks before and one week after surgery.
