CAR T-Cell and Stem Cell Therapy for Multiple Myeloma Treatment
As a comprehensive cancer center, University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center offers the most advanced treatment for multiple myeloma, including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy and stem cell transplant procedures.
CAR T-Cell Therapy for Adults With Multiple Myeloma
CAR T-cell is a type of immunotherapy that works by taking a patient’s white blood cells, called T-cells, and genetically modifying them so that they can fight cancer cells. Because CAR-T cells are derived from the patient’s own immune system, they are often referred to as a “living drug.”
Veteran Receives Bone Marrow Transplant as an Outpatient
When Navy veteran Tracey Lynch was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and required a bone marrow transplant, she was pleased to have the option of being treated on an outpatient basis.
Read MoreAfter T-cells are extracted from a patient’s blood and sent to a laboratory to be modified, they are infused back into the patient’s body. The modified immune cells are then able to recognize, attack and kill cancer cells, giving new hope to people with multiple myeloma and other cancers when other treatments have been unsuccessful.
Since 2022, UH Seidman Cancer Center has offered a streamlined version of the CAR T-cell manufacturing process, called rapid or ultra-fast CAR T-cell production, in which CAR T-cells are made on-site in under 24 hours. Most commercial suppliers take three weeks to produce CAR T-cells. UH Seidman Cancer Center is one of the first hospitals to test and use this revolutionary manufacturing approach.
UH Seidman Cancer Center was the first hospital to treat a patient in Ohio with ABECMA (idecabtagene vicleucel), the first FDA-approved CAR T-cell therapy approved for adults with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. ABECMA is used to treat multiple myeloma in patients who have undergone at least four other treatment types that have not worked or have stopped working.
