Nurses at UH Strive for Stroke Prevention

Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability in the United States. Improving community knowledge of stroke risk factors and stroke symptoms is a critical factor in improving access to preventative stroke treatments and acute stroke intervention.

A simple screening can provide peace of mind and provide insight into possible risk factors and prevention options.

With this in mind, the UH Neurological Institute implemented the UH Stroke Screening program in 2011. Since 2014, UH nurses, with the help of other staff, have screened nearly 4,000 people.

“This is an amazing opportunity for nurses to connect with people in the community and hopefully prevent someone from having a stroke,” says RN Amy Pesta.
